This week, Chapelford Primary School celebrated Careers Week with exciting lessons and activities designed to spark the imagination and inspire the next generation. Each year group focused on a different career theme, linked to their curriculum area, and explored the skills required for each role. The week not only encouraged students to think about their future careers but also aligned with the school’s core value of ‘Aspirations.’

EYFS: People Who Help Us in Our Local Area

In Early Years, children learned about the essential roles that people play in our local community. The theme “People Who Help Us” helped them understand the importance of these jobs and how they impact everyday life. The highlight of the week was a visit from a local Vet practice manager, who shared what it's like to work in animal care and how they help pets and their owners.

Year 1: Travel and Tourism

Year 1 explored the exciting world of travel and tourism, connecting their geography lessons about continents and countries to real-world careers. A special guest from Tui Travel spoke about the travel industry, highlighting the different roles within tourism and what skills are needed to work in the field.

Year 2: Firefighting

Year 2’s theme revolved around the important role of firefighters, with a connection to their history lessons on the Great Fire of London. They discussed how the role of firefighters has changed since 1666. A safety expert from Safety Central visited the class to share fire safety tips and explain the vital work that firefighters do every day to keep us safe.

Year 3: Farming

In Year 3, the theme of farming linked to their geography lessons on where food comes from. The class learned about agriculture and how farming plays a significant part in producing the food we eat. A local sheep farmer visited to give the students an insight into the life of a farmer, showing how they take care of animals and grow food.

Year 4: Dentistry

Year 4 focused on the world of dentistry, relating it to their science lessons on human teeth and their functions. The students learned about the importance of dental health and the role of a dentist. A visit from a local dentist and a veterinary dentist gave the students a broader view of this career, showing them how dentists work with both humans and animals.

Year 5: Politics

Year 5 explored the fascinating world of politics, linking their British Values lessons and the Rule of Law to careers in government. The class took part in an engaging online session with a member of the House of Lords. The session gave them a deeper understanding of the democratic system, the role of politicians, and how they help shape the law.

Year 6: Fashion and Design

In Year 6, students focused on fashion and design, linking the theme to their design and technology lessons on creating innovative, functional, and appealing products. A special guest from Boohoo Man visited the class, sharing insights into the fashion industry and the skills needed to succeed in this creative and dynamic career.

Sharing and Reflection

On Thursday, each class had the opportunity to share what they had learned about their chosen career with another year group. This activity allowed the children to inspire each other and broaden their understanding of different career paths. It was a fantastic chance to develop aspirations and discover new interests.

Finally, each year group reflected on the range of careers they had heard about during the week. The pupils discussed the skills, qualities, and hard work required for each role, and many left the week feeling more motivated and excited about their future careers.

Careers Week at Chapelford was a huge success, helping to nurture the aspirations of our children and giving them a deeper understanding of the world of work. Through inspiring visitors and hands-on learning, the children gained valuable insights into various professions, making this a memorable and impactful week for all. We would like to thank all of the people who took the time to come in and give our children such engaging and wonderful sessions. This made the whole week feel much more real and gave the children a thorough understanding of the world outside of our school.
