Chapelford Village Primary School is taking a proactive step towards enhancing the overall well-being and development of its students by embracing the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) Playtimes initiative. This innovative program emphasises the importance of outdoor play and learning, fostering a creative and engaging environment for children during break times.

The OPAL program, developed by a team of experts in play and environmental education, focuses on creating dynamic and inclusive outdoor spaces that encourage physical activity, social interaction, and imaginative play. With a strong emphasis on risk-taking, problem-solving, and team-building, the initiative aims to boost children's confidence, resilience, and overall happiness.

Chapelford Village Primary School has undergone a huge transformation in its outdoor spaces, introducing diverse play zones and equipment designed to stimulate children's creativity and curiosity. The site now features areas for imaginative play, natural elements like plants and trees, and opportunities for physical activities that promote a healthy and active lifestyle.

Miss Webb expressed her enthusiasm for the positive impact the OPAL Playtimes initiative will have on the school community, stating, "We believe that children learn best when they are happy and engaged. The OPAL program aligns perfectly with our philosophy of providing a holistic education that nurtures not only academic success but also the social and emotional well-being of our pupils."

On the first day of implementing the OPAL Playtimes program at Chapelford Village Primary School, the schoolyard buzzed with excitement as children eagerly participated in a range of dynamic activities across the site. Laughter echoed through the air as the table tennis tables became lively arenas for friendly matches, fostering not only physical activity but also encouraging sportsmanship and teamwork. The water play area proved to be a highlight of the day, with children enthusiastically engaging in a unique challenge – transporting water to a central dam using interconnected tubes. This creative water activity also promoted problem-solving skills and collaboration among some of our youngest pupils. Scooters zipped around the play spaces, adding an extra layer of exhilaration to the day. We asked the children what they thought of their new playtime:

"This is the best playtime ever!"

"I like being able to play with my older sister and see some of the older children."

"I like that I can choose where I go and what I want to play with."

New areas will be opening soon including a mud kitchen and sand pit. Chapelford Village Primary School's decision to adopt the OPAL Playtimes initiative reflects a forward-thinking approach to education, putting the well-being and happiness of its students at the forefront. As the program takes root, the school anticipates a positive impact on the overall school culture, with our pupils reaping the benefits of enhanced outdoor play experiences.
