At Chapelford, we believe that a rich, broad curriculum is key to developing curious, creative, and forward-thinking learners. Our Design & Technology (DT) curriculum plays a vital role in helping children see how their ideas can come to life—encouraging them to think like designers, engineers, and problem-solvers.

This week, some of our talented Year 6 pupils had the fantastic opportunity to take part in a DT Celebration Day, marking the end of their exciting recent project—run in collaboration with Rolls Royce in our local area.

The project challenged pupils to design, build, and engineer their own vehicles from scratch! Throughout the unit, they researched car design, measured and cut wood precisely to build their chassis, added supports for stability, and even constructed an electrical circuit complete with a motor, pulley system, and switch to power their cars forward and in reverse.

During the celebration day, the children tested their vehicles on both flat and inclined surfaces, carefully observing how well their designs performed. The day was not only a brilliant way to showcase their hard work, but also to build confidence and ignite a passion for engineering and innovation.

We’re also incredibly proud to share that two of our pupils were recognised as Best Engineering Communicators—a testament to their clear explanations, teamwork, and thoughtful design choices.

What a fantastic experience for our young engineers—and a powerful reminder of how important it is that our wider curriculum continues to inspire the problem-solvers and inventors of tomorrow!
