This term, our brilliant Year 6 pupils have been cooking up a storm as part of their Design and Technology project focused on food preparation and hygiene.

The children began their project by exploring existing soup products by tasting, describing and evaluating different flavours and textures. Using words like smooth, chunky, spicy, and mild, they carefully analysed each soup. They even discovered that fruits and vegetables with similar colours often have similar health benefits!

Using this knowledge, the children then designed their own soup recipes thinking about taste, texture, nutrition and appearance. They also learned how eating seasonal vegetables is not only good for our health but also better for the environment.

Next, the class put their geography skills to the test by finding out where different fruits and vegetables are grown around the world. They also investigated how herbs and spices could change the taste of their soups and learned that everyone’s tastes are different!

When it was time to cook, the children followed their carefully planned recipes. They learned to chop safely using the bridge and claw techniques, practised good food hygiene and made sure to avoid cross-contamination in the kitchen. We were so proud to see how sensibly they worked - and how well they worked together!

To celebrate their hard work, the children turned our school hall into a cosy Year 6 Soup Kitchen by inviting their parents to come and taste the final results. On the menu were delicious soups such as tomato, spiced vegetable, leek and potato and chicken.

The event was a big hit! The children were polite, confident servers and the parents were very happy (and full!). The children greeted the adults, seated them, took their soup order and delivered it with a smile. We had incredible hosts delivering bread, water and cutlery along with the soup.  The smell of soup filled the school and left everyone’s mouths watering. We had some lovely feedback and we are sure we have some budding chefs of the future!

We are incredibly proud of how creative, collaborative and responsible our Year 6 pupils have been. This project has not only helped them grow in confidence and skill, it was a lovely way to celebrate their final days at primary school.

Well done, Year 6!
