This week, our school was filled with excitement and energy as we celebrated Lunar New Year across all year groups. It has been an incredible week of learning, fun, and cultural exchange, with every child having the opportunity to take part in various activities.

One of the highlights was the Chinese Dragon Dance Workshop. Every child, from EYFS to Year 6, had the chance to collaborate with their classmates to manoeuvre the magnificent dragon through the hall. They worked together to bring the dragon to life, performing a beautiful, choreographed dance with the help of brightly coloured props. It was wonderful to see children of all ages working together, learning new skills, and having so much fun in the process.

In addition to the dragon dance, all year groups engaged in arts and crafts activities linked to traditional Chinese decorations. They made snakes, lanterns, and red envelopes – each symbolizing good fortune and new beginnings. Some year groups even had the opportunity to practice writing in Cantonese, further immersing themselves in the culture and traditions surrounding Lunar New Year.

We were also incredibly fortunate to have some of our wonderful parents volunteer their time to speak with the children about the significance of the Lunar New Year. Our parents shared their personal experiences of celebrating this festive time, explaining the traditions of wearing new clothes, cleaning the house to welcome blessings, and putting up red and gold decorations to ward off bad spirits. The children also learned about the custom of giving red envelopes filled with money to wish others prosperity.

A huge thank you to all the parents who took the time to come into school and support our children’s learning. Your contributions truly enriched our celebration!

EYFS Lunar New Year Activities

The children in EYFS had a fantastic afternoon learning all about Lunar New Year. They started by listening to the story of the Great Race, which explains how the Chinese zodiac came to be. Afterward, the children had a fun activity where they moved like the animals in the story, allowing their friends to guess which animal they were.

The EYFS children also made their own Chinese decorations, practiced using chopsticks, and even had a go at writing some numbers. They have finished their week of learning and festivities by taking part in a Chinese Dance workshop.

It has been such a special week, and we’re so proud of how the children have embraced the Lunar New Year celebrations.
