Chapelford Village Primary School transformed into a place of magic and wonder on Wednesday as they celebrated World Book Day in the most enchanting way possible. The day was full of surprises, with each class receiving a mysterious envelope bearing their name and location. Inside these peculiar envelopes were letters sealed with wax, inviting the children to the prestigious Chapelford School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The adventure began as the children arrived at school, entering through a giant balloon arch and passing through bubbles that added to the magical atmosphere. At the gates, witches greeted them and collected their permission slips, signaling that the magic was about to unfold.

Throughout the day, the children participated in a variety of enchanting activities. One of the highlights was wand-making, where students crafted their very own magical wands, ready to cast spells and charms. The excitement didn’t stop there—students also enjoyed a thrilling game of quidditch, a beloved sport from the wizarding world.

Professor Hackett, the school's very own potions master, hosted an interactive potions class, where the children had the opportunity to mix strange and fascinating ingredients like dragon blood and pumpkin juice to create fizzing, bubbling potions. The children's faces lit up with excitement as they brewed their concoctions, eagerly watching the potions react in mysterious ways.

The day’s festivities also included the fun challenge of guessing the identity of the "Masked Reader." The teachers read excerpts from popular books while hiding behind masks, leaving the children to guess who was behind each one. This became a delightful guessing game that had the entire school buzzing with curiosity.

To build up to the big day, each year group read a special magical-themed text together, igniting their love for reading and sparking their imaginations:

  • EYFS explored the whimsical world of Meg and Mog, a story about a young witch and her cat.
  • Year 1 were enchanted by the classic Room on the Broom, following the adventures of a kind witch and her animal friends.
  • Year 2 delved into The Magic Crayon, a magical story about a crayon that brings drawings to life.
  • Year 3 and 4 journeyed into the world of mythical creatures with Beast Quest and Fantastic Beasts, discovering magical worlds and creatures beyond imagination.
  • Year 5 read the timeless tale of The Wizard of Oz, joining Dorothy and her companions on a magical adventure down the Yellow Brick Road.
  • Year 6 explored the epic world of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, where young wizards and witches face danger and adventure in the fight against evil.

Adding an extra touch of magic, a magician was on hand throughout the whole of dinner time, delighting the children with tricks and illusions that left them amazed and amused. His mesmerizing performances added to the day’s enchantment, ensuring the magic never stopped.

And the excitement didn’t end there! A mysterious delivery arrived at school the following morning, and Chapelford is now the proud owner of two reading vending machines! There have been many speculations as to how they appeared—some children have even wondered if the magic from the day before, Zog, or perhaps even a fairy, was responsible! These new additions are part of the school’s commitment to promoting a love of reading, and the children can't wait to try them out.

To add to the excitement, the school is rolling out a new reading reward scheme. Children will now have the chance to earn a special gold coin, which they can use to choose their very own book from the vending machines. The children are already buzzing with excitement at the possibility of being able to pick out a book of their choice as a reward for their reading efforts. More information will be shared about this very shortly.

The children and staff shared how much they enjoyed reading their magical-themed books, and how these texts not only sparked excitement for World Book Day, but also deepened their love for reading. It was a day filled with laughter, learning, and, of course, magic, as Chapelford Village Primary School embraced the magic of reading in the most unforgettable way.
