Year 2 have had a truly magical week as they continued their English learning linked to the much-loved book The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. In this story, the children follow the journey of a young owl named Plop, who must learn to overcome his fear of the dark before he can fly with confidence.

The children have been thoroughly enjoying getting to know Plop and have been using story maps to help them learn, retell and rehearse the story in preparation for their own writing. Their enthusiasm has been wonderful to see! To support their learning even further, Year 2 had a very special visit this week from Cheshire Falconry, who brought along some incredible owls for the children to meet. The experience brought the story to life in the most exciting way.

The children were introduced to:

  • A baby African owl – already huge in size and just beginning to learn how to explore and have fun!
  • A tiny owl – who wowed everyone with its size and fascinating features.
  • Along the way, the children learned lots of amazing facts about owls, their habits and how they survive in the wild.

The visit created a real buzz in the classroom and has given the children even more inspiration for their writing. We can’t wait to see the fantastic stories Year 2 will produce as Plop’s adventure continues!
