Year 1 had a fantastic day out at Walton Hall Gardens and what an adventure it was! The children represented the school brilliantly and enjoyed a day packed with exploring, learning and lots of laughter.

They started their day with a visit to the zoo, where they became animal experts! The children worked hard to categorise the animals into herbivores, omnivores and carnivores. They noticed that there were far more herbivores than the other groups and had some brilliant discussions about what animals eat and why.

Of course, the funniest part of the zoo visit had to be the peacocks! Poor Mrs Lad was absolutely petrified of them, while the children thought it was hilarious and kept excitedly shouting for the peacocks to come over. Safe to say, the children enjoyed it much more than Mrs Lad did!

Next, they visited the botanical greenhouse where they spotted beautiful koi carp swimming gracefully and explored a wonderful variety of plants and flowers. The children loved looking at the different colours, shapes and textures around them.

After all that exploring, they were ready for lunch and enjoyed eating by the pond. During lunch, they were lucky enough to spot a heron fishing nearby – a lovely surprise for everyone! They also had some rather cheeky ducks trying to sneak a taste of their sandwiches!

Their final adventure took them into the woods where they became nature artists. They carefully sketched common flowers, created leaf rubbings and produced some fantastic Andy Goldsworthy-inspired natural artwork. They also discussed the different trees around them and learned more about the natural environment. The only people struggling by this point were the adults, who all seemed to be suffering from hay fever — much to the amusement of the children!

Before they knew it, it was time to head back to the coach and make the journey home after a wonderful day full of discovery, creativity and memories.

If Year 1 had this much fun on a day trip, just imagine how exciting it is that next year they will be heading off on a residential adventure! Everyone cannot wait to see what exciting memories they will make next!
